    About Us

    History

Although the Town of Maine Cemetery was officially chartered in 1858, the site had been used as a burial ground for at least four decades earlier. In fact, the oldest headstone (James Watts) is dated 1811, which precedes the incorporation of the State of Illinois. It is the second oldest cemetery in Cook County. Several pioneers who settled this area are buried in the Cemetery, including such familiar names as Talcott, Ballard, Higgins and Rand.

A large monument marks the graves of George Penny and his family. Penny founded a local brickyard in 1853. Pennyville became Brickton in 1858, and Park Ridge in 1873. At least six Park Ridge mayors are interred here, as are two Des Plaines mayors.

Other notables buried in the Cemetery include Frederick Noyes, Dean of the University of Illinois college of dentistry, and Bob Hale, Major League Baseball player. Early merchants are here, as well, such as the Moheiser, Lagerhausen and Scharringhausen families.

A large memorial dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic is capped by a Civil War soldier and surrounded by veterans of that conflict. Spanish-American War veterans are buried there, too. Many other veterans are buried throughout the Cemetery, including at least

one member of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

    This truly is hallowed ground.

    Administration

Day-to-day operations are provided by our licensed and professional staff. Overall management is under the direction of the Town of Maine Cemetery Association Board of Trustees comprised of volunteer member selected to two-year terms.“The Board has a sacred trust to preserve and protect the Town of Maine Cemetery and its past, present and future.”-- from the Association Bylaws

    Unique Setting & Character

Visitors to the Town of Maine Cemetery enjoy its beautiful, park-like setting. The 21-acre Cemetery is home to a large grove of magnificent oak trees. Maples and elms grow here, too. Pines, Firs, Spruces and Yews are among the evergreens which provide year-round foliage.

Wildlife enthusiasts will see rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, foxes, raccoons and an occasional

deer. Bird watchers will spot cardinals, bluejays, woodpeckers, geese and hawks – to name

    just a few.

Many of the headstones contribute to the unique character of the Cemetery. They reflect the people they honor. You will see magicians’ wands, musical notes, racing flags and other emblems on monuments. A visitor favorite marks the grave of Helen Bowden. A Scrabble

board cleverly notes several aspects of her life. Personal touches such as these are not allowed

at many cemeteries; but they help make the Town of Maine Cemetery a special place.

The Cemetery Gate House is a historic landmark. The building was designed by Alfonso Iannelli, a famous artist, sculptor and designer. Among his other works are the interior of the Pickwick Theater (Park Ridge), the signs of the Zodiac around the Adler Planetarium and the Rock of Gibraltar relief on the façade of the Prudential Building. Iannelli lived and worked in Park Ridge. He is buried in the Cemetery.
